Hydrogen economy in Jyväskylä and Central Finland
The hydrogen economy in Central Finland is developing rapidly and visibly. Jyväskylä is at the heart of hydrogen development, and practical applications are already part of everyday life. The City of Jyväskylä is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, and one of the most significant factors in reaching this goal is reducing emissions from transport. The country’s first hydrogen buses began operating in autumn 2025, and both a hydrogen refuelling station and a production unit are now in operation, with pilot projects already implemented.
To advance the hydrogen economy in Central Finland, the H2 Innovation Alliance has been established, bringing together key stakeholders in the field. The aim of the alliance is to make Central Finland a frontrunner in the hydrogen economy by turning research and expertise into concrete pilots and business opportunities. In addition to the City of Jyväskylä, the alliance includes Cefmof, VTT, the University of Jyväskylä, JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Kasvu Open, Jyväskylä Startup Factory, and the Regional Council of Central Finland.
During 2026–2027, Proof of Concept experiments will be launched in the region to test hydrogen in practical applications. Some technologies are still at the conceptual stage, while others are close to implementation. These experiments will help assess which solutions are ready for the next step.
Anyone can join the open hydrogen network via the Howspace platform, where the hydrogen community can connect, collaborate, and turn ideas into action. This shared workspace is designed to bring together stakeholders from different sectors to exchange knowledge, spark innovation, and advance hydrogen development. The H2 Innovation Alliance community brings together a wide range of regional and international partners with a shared goal: to accelerate hydrogen solutions, support the green transition, and strengthen regional expertise.
