From biogas innovations to sustainable energy solutions

Metener Service Oy, based in Vaajakoski, Jyväskylä, is a Finnish bioenergy and energy technology company that develops and delivers renewable energy solutions both in Finland and internationally. At the core of the company's operations is strong expertise in biogas, biomethane, and hydrogen production technologies, as well as the management of their entire value chains.

A Pioneer in biogas solutions

Metener's roots date back to the late 1990s, when the company's founder, biogas pioneer Erkki Kalmari, built a biogas plant on his own farm. This practical development work laid the foundation for the company.

Metener has played a key role in developing some of Finland's most significant biogas solutions. The country's first biogas-powered vehicle was introduced as early as 2002, and the first public biogas refueling station opened in 2004.

Solutions across the entire value chain

Metener provides comprehensive solutions for bioenergy production. Its services cover the production, upgrading, and distribution of biogas, e-methane, and hydrogen.

In practice, this includes:

  • Design and implementation of biogas plants (dry anaerobic digestion)

  • Upgrading biogas into biomethane

  • Electrolysis solutions for hydrogen production

  • Compression and refueling solutions for hydrogen and biomethane

  • Energy solutions for heat and electricity generation, including hydrogen and methane fuel cells and burners

  • Biomethanation reactors for e-methane production

Technologies developed by Metener enable the utilization of organic side streams and surplus energy peaks as renewable energy in the form of both gas and electricity.

Metener's operating model combines Finnish technological expertise with projects implemented together with local partners, enabling scalable and cost-effective solutions for different markets. In addition to Finland, Metener's solutions have been delivered to several countries across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

Research and collaboration at the core

Research and development are a central part of Metener's operations. The company collaborates with universities and research institutions and develops pilot and testing environments for bioenergy and circular economy solutions.

Metener's development efforts were further accelerated through its participation in the Seed Village accelerator programme organized by Kasvu Open and the City of Jyväskylä in 2025. The programme provided the company with opportunities to develop its business, expand its networks, and strengthen growth related particularly to new energy solutions.

"Through the programme, we found the right contacts to support our renewal, and the close cooperation has continued even after the accelerator programme ended. It was possible to openly discuss and develop ideas with experts, and there was no sense of competition among the participants. On the contrary," says Juho Tasanen, CEO of Metener.

New ECR solution accelerates the hydrogen economy

Metener has expanded its expertise even further into hydrogen economy solutions. The company's latest innovation is ECR (Electrolyzer Compression & Refueling), an integrated electrolysis, compression, and refueling solution that provides a flexible and easy-to-deploy approach to hydrogen production and distribution.

The ECR system has been designed as a mobile and modular solution. It can be utilized as a standalone hydrogen production, compression, and refueling unit or equipped with the desired storage capacity to function as a satellite station within a broader hydrogen infrastructure network.

One of the solution's key advantages is its compact size and design that takes permitting requirements into account. This enables faster deployment and easier integration into a wide range of applications. The ECR solution responds to the growing need for cost-efficient and flexible decentralized hydrogen production and refueling infrastructure.

In practical terms, the system can be compared to a fast-charging station for electric vehicles.

"We have been delighted to join the hydrogen cooperation ecosystem emerging in Central Finland. In particular, the small and medium-sized hydrogen applications developed through collaboration have been meaningful and highly beneficial for our company. We believe that this work and operating model are laying the foundation for a nationwide energy transition. We see Finland, and especially Central Finland, as having the potential to play a key role in Europe's energy transformation," says Tasanen.

Towards a Carbon-Neutral Future

Metener's mission is to promote the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The company's solutions support energy self-sufficiency and sustainable development both locally and globally.

For the Jyväskylä region, Metener brings internationally recognized cleantech expertise that combines agriculture, technology, and industry into innovative circular economy solutions. The new ECR solution further strengthens this development by providing a concrete tool to support the growth of the hydrogen economy and zero-emission transportation both in Finland and in international markets.
